Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola insists Liverpool must do more in the summer transfer window. The Spaniard admits other teams are currently ahead of what the Reds have achieved in this market.

Liverpool have made two signings so far, bringing in Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai for a combined initial fee of £95million. Jurgen Klopp had to make up for the midfield departures of James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

However, the German has since lost a further two experienced options in the middle of the park. Jordan Henderson and Fabinho have both left for the Saudi Pro League in mega-money deals.

Guardiola himself hasn’t been particularly busy yet. Mateo Kovacic is the only high-profile addition to date, though he will soon be joined by his Croatia team-mate Josko Gvardiol who Guardiola confirmed was undergoing a medical on Friday after a fee of over £77m was agreed with RB Leipzig.

ity head into the new season with the task of following last term’s treble triumph. Guardiola believes there will be an increased number of sides challenging for major honours.

He name-checked both Arsenal and Newcastle as two teams who he believes have strengthened their starting XIs with summer signings. However, the 52-year-old was honest in claiming there is more work for Liverpool to do.

Guardiola said: “There is not one or two teams but a lot of teams who will fight for everything. The challenge is massive for us. Mentally, how we can grow as a team and football-wise, the challenge is there.

“How starving are we, how is our desire to defend what we won? We will see during a process of 11 months during the lower moments. I think we will have more than ever, so it is how we overcome them.
