Moises Caicedo looks set to join Chelsea over Liverpool after he made his preference clear to parent club Brighton – and fans are not happy.
Liverpool were ready to walk away from a deal on Friday evening just hours after they agreed a British record transfer fee of a whopping £110million – which looked to have won them the race.
The 21-year-old midfielder reportedly told Liverpool that he preferred a move to the London club despite their mammoth bid, with Todd Boehly’s staff reopening talks following the lunchtime update.
Fabrizio Romano reported that Chelsea are back in contact with Brighton as of 8:45pm on Friday August 11 with Liverpool prepared to end their interest. Sky Sports then added that an even bigger record fee of £115m could be sanctioned.
That update came as Chelsea closed in on a deal for Southampton’s Romeo Lavia – another player that had been the subject of Liverpool bids.
The combined news of the apparent transfer failures left Liverpool fans nothing short of fuming – flocking to social media to express their discontent.
One fan wrote: “We’re so done, Chelsea are bluffing 100%.” A second added: “If we do that and don’t bid for Lavia it would be the most embarrassing day in our transfer history.”
A third posted: “FSG have made a complete mess of this.” A fourth continued: “This is such an embarrassing club.”
He said: “First and foremost, I got told that I can confirm the deal with the club is agreed. We want the player.”
When asked about the substantial fee, he added after slamming Paul Pogba’s £89m move to Manchester United in 2016: “What changed? We are a club which doesn’t have endless resources.
“Some things we didn’t expect to happen this summer, Hendo (Jordan Henderson), Fabinho, that we didn’t think about, when that happened we gave it a go.”
