Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp took a pop at Chelsea, who look set to pip his side to the British record signing of Moises Caicedo. The two Premier League heavyweights went head-to-head on Sunday, contesting an entertaining 1-1 draw in their first game of the season.

Speculation around Caicedo’s club future hit top gear on Friday, when Liverpool were reported to have gazumped Chelsea in a secret auction with Brighton by slapping £110million on the table.

Shortly afterwards, Klopp confirmed that a fee had been agreed with the Seagulls, but there was to be an agonising twist in the tale as Caicedo is believed to have informed all parties that Chelsea remains his preferred destination.

The Blues are now reportedly working on a revised deal with Brighton, which could see them fork out £115m if payment structure terms can be agreed. The back-and-forth drama added an extra element of spice when Chelsea and Liverpool faced off on Sunday.

After the final whistle, Klopp declined to provide an update on Caicedo. And when asked to reflect on comments made by Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino that he wants more signings before next month’s transfer deadline, Klopp added: “That’s what each Chelsea manager wants, and usually they get it.”

The Londoners have spent big again this summer, having blitzed their rivals in successive transfer windows since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital acquired the club last year.
