EPL: Alan Shearer criticises Guardiola for how he handled Haaland

Alan Shearer, a former Newcastle United player, criticised Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, for how he handled Erling Haaland.

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has hit out at Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola’s treatment of Erling Haaland during the Citizens’ 3-0 Premier League win over Burnley on Saturday.

Man City defeated Burnley at Turf Moor in their Premier League opener at the weekend.

During the encounter, Haaland scored a brace in the first 36 minutes of the match but seemingly complained about a lack of service towards the end of the first half.

This apparently drew a reaction from Guardiola, and as Haaland walked towards the tunnel, the former Barcelona head coach was seen berating the Norway international before pushing the camera away from his direction.

Shearer was confused about why Guardiola did not wait for Haaland to reach the dressing room before having a go at him, insisting that he would’ve said two words to the former Bayern Munich coach if he were the player.

“I am old school; I love how he [Guardiola] is so driven and wants perfection. If he doesn’t want the cameras to see him, then wait until you are in the dressing room,” Shearer said on Match of the Day.

“I would not have liked that. I would have said two words to him and one of them would have been off. Say what you want to me in the dressing room and give me the biggest telling-off, but not in front of the crowd like that. No.”
