Liverpool phones tend to be some of the quietest as the transfer window draws to a conclusion. There were a few late calls exchanged last summer as a hasty loan for Arthur Melo was put together, but permanent business had been concluded well over a month prior.
It’s a different landscape this year. In his press conference, Jürgen Klopp confirmed that ‘everything is possible’ in terms of more incoming business, with Liverpool still set to ‘look’ in the market. The arrival of Wataru Endo perhaps reduces the urgency of that search, but it would be a surprise if business finished here.
Sure enough, both Liverpool and Manchester United have reportedly put in calls to a European giant this week, seeking to ascertain whether a transfer green light is possible before the end of the window. That’s in relation to a midfield addition, while Klopp could also do with another defender ahead of the deadline.
Elsewhere, Todd Boehly’s phone has no doubt been going almost non-stop from the moment he stepped through the door at Chelsea. That’s the nature of orchestrating a horrifying spend of well over $1bn (£800m/€920m). But he suffered a rare rejection this week — and is already said to be looking to drown his sorrows in the transfer market.
Chelsea in double inquiry after rejection
In what has been a tough few days for Chelsea, featuring an injury blow and a sale very much influenced by Financial Fair Play concerns, Boehly has also suffered a transfer market rejection. He triggered Michael Olise’s release clause, only for the player to sign an extension at Crystal Palace.
Despite those looming FFP concerns, Chelsea still wants to respond with further transfer business. According to 90MIN, it has made two inquiries in the wake of the Olise snub.
One deal being explored involves Jérémy Doku. Once admired by Klopp as a possible heir to Sadio Mané, he has been linked more heavily with Manchester City of late (Daily Mail). Meanwhile, Chelsea has also inquired about Brennan Johnson of Nottingham Forest.
Liverpool and Man United ‘make calls’ over Ryan Gravenberch
Liverpool and Manchester United have both been on the phone to Bayern Munich this week, reports Fabrizio Romano. They both want to be kept updated with the Ryan Gravenberch situation.
On some level, this must be a little perplexing for Bayern Munich, which has been consistent and steadfast with its stance all summer. As of now, it still has no intention of selling the Dutchman.
Nevertheless, Liverpool and its bitter rival are both eager to pounce in the event of ‘last-minute changes’. Gravenberch was an unused substitute in the DFL-Supercup loss against RB Leipzig.
