TalkSPORT pundit Gabby Agbonlahor has criticised Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw for the first goal that Tottenham Hotspur scored at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium today.
The former Aston Villa striker has said on talkSPORT (6:39pm, August 19, 2023) that Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw should have done better for the first goal that Tottenham Hotspur scored in the Premier League game between the two sides at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday evening.
Pape Matar Sarr scored the first goal for Spurs in the 49th minute.
An own goal from defender Lisandro Martinez on 83 minutes saw Tottenham wrap up the three points.
Criticism for Luke Shaw for Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur
Agbonlahor was not impressed with United’s defending for Tottenham’s opening goal.
The talkSPORT pundit noted that Dejan Kulusevski got so much down Shaw’s side in the build-up to the goal.
The Sweden international forward started on the right of an attacking-midfield three for Tottenham in a 4-2-3-1 formation.
Kulusevski’s cross ricocheted off Lisandro Martinez and fell for Sarr to score from just six yards out.
Former Villa striker Agbonlahor has noted that Shaw could have done better, saying that it was poor defending from United for the goal.
The pundit said: “The Manchester United defending… Luke Shaw is having a siesta on the left-hand side when Kuluselvski went through.
“Great goal from Spurs point of view, poor defending from Manchester United.”
Tottenham Hotspur were the better team, and Manchester United did struggle at the back.
While Shaw could have done better for Spurs’ first goal and were disappointing overall, there were one or two occasions when the Englishman made timely challenges and blocks and prevented Tottenham from adding to the scoreline.
