Mauricio Pochettino has an exciting new-look squad to work with this season following a £350million spending spree that shows no sign of slowing up.
Moises Caicedo’s British record transfer earlier this week was followed by another major purchase in the shape of Romeo Lavia on Friday, and both midfielders are now in line to make their debuts against West Ham tomorrow.
Hargreaves believes the Blues are well set to improve significantly under Pochettino but fears the decision to replace Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy with former Brighton No.1 Robert Sanchez represents a concern.
Talented young American Gabriel Slonina has been allowed to join Belgian club K.A.S. Eupen on loan and although Chelsea are targeting a move for Djordje Petrovic, Hargreaves cannot understand why they did not make an attempt to sign David Raya from Brentford.
‘Anyone that has played with a goalkeeper knows they’re different,’ Hargreaves said. ‘David Raya is an amazing goalkeeper, his ability with his feet is that of a top-four goalkeeper all day.
‘Ramsdale had a little blip towards the end of last season, a tiny one. Everyone respects he’s done an amazing job, but why shouldn’t he have competition? I think he’s a top four goalkeeper.
‘I’m just amazed Chelsea didn’t go for him, because I think they’re the ones who needed him badly.’
He added: ‘The only worry I have for Chelsea is Sanchez the goalkeeper. I know he’s a good goalkeeper but they lost two good ones in Kepa and Mendy.
‘They’re defintiely not better than they were and I think the goalkeeper position they look a little bit light there.’
