Elmas had an impressive season in Naples, playing a big part in his team’s first title win in 33 years. This has led to speculation that he could be on the move, with journalist Fabrizio Romano linking him with Liverpool back in June.
Since then, there has been little movement in terms of the Reds, or any other side. But according to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, that has now started to change.
They claim that notorious talent spotters RB Leipzig have made an offer to Napoli for Elmas. With the bid totalling around £26m, the Serie A champions ‘sent it back.’
However, should another proposal arrive, it seems that Napoli may have to give it extra thought. Despite the failed bid, Elmas is reportedly ‘not willing’ to renew a contract that has two years left to run. His refusal to commit to Napoli has led to lingering ‘doubts about the future.’
Elmas Napoli future in doubt
As a creative and languid midfielder, Elmas is perhaps not what Liverpool currently need. But the links to him from this summer appeared genuine.
It could be that they have earmarked the North Macedonian for a slightly different role to what he’s used to.
It could also be that the Reds are keeping an eye on his precarious situation in Naples for future reference.
Should Elmas stay where he is for now, he’ll have just a year to go on his contract next summer. He’ll still only be 24 by then and could be a real bargain pick-up for somebody. Liverpool would be wise to keep tabs.
Alternatively, if he ends up joining Leipzig this summer, then don’t rule the Reds out of a move either.
They have a good relationship with the Red Bull side, having bought Ibrahima Konate and Dominik Szoboszlai from them in recent years.
If Elmas ends up there and does well, perhaps that will be the trigger Liverpool need to truly enter the race. Well worth keeping an eye on this one.
