Alisson Becker on Newcastle saves, Liverpool’s unity and Darwin Nunez’s ‘fire’

Alisson Becker wants Liverpool to carry forward the same desire and unity that was on display in the Reds’ remarkable comeback victory over Newcastle United.

Darwin Nunez’s late double saw Jürgen Klopp’s side depart St. James’ Park on Sunday with a memorable three points from what was a topsy-turvy Premier League encounter.

Anthony Gordon had opened the scoring in the first half for the hosts, before Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk received a red card for a foul on Alexander Isak moments later.

But Klopp’s charges rallied to secure the win with the help of Nunez and Alisson, with the latter providing a number of crucial saves between the posts throughout the contest.

Read on below as the No.1 gave his reaction to Liverpoolfc.com post-match…

On whether he had one word to sum up the day…

Nunez! Nunez! Nunez! Yeah, Darwin. I think we have to talk about him, two amazing goals that he created. It wasn’t easy to finish those two situations off, but he did in an amazing way, but he did not make it alone. I think the team, wow, it was an amazing performance with one less player on the pitch. It was really hard, mentally as well, it was big challenge for us to keep believing. We said at half-time we must believe we are capable of doing something here in the second half and we did it.

On his saves becoming more important as the game carried on…

I’ve been in football for a long way now and I know that sometimes you can make a really good save and things go towards a good direction for the team. Then sometimes you make an amazing save and things go in a bad direction. So, anything can happen in football, I just try to be focused on the next ball to try to keep helping the team.

Today wasn’t easy, not only for me, but for the team for the circumstances; conceding an early goal, having a man sent off. For a long, long way it was really hard to play like that, but for the team it was an amazing performance with 10 men, I think one of the best performances maybe we had in the last months, the last year, I don’t know, but it was a great one. I think we have to take this desire, this passion, this unity that we are creating here and take it forward for the next games.

On it potentially being a big moment for Nunez in his Liverpool career…

This guy is amazing. He has a lot of expectations on him about his performances, from supporters, from everybody, from his teammates, from the staff, everybody, because he is really good. He is amazing and he has huge potential. But he’s still young and he needs time. We have to be patient with him and we have to support him in a way that he feels that we are really there supporting him.

All the moments, the hard moments, we are there for him. The South Americans are there for him, all the teammates are there for him and I see the supporters as well, everybody loves him. When he comes on in a game they shout his name already: Nunez! Nunez! We make a few jokes with him about that as well, but I’m serious, I say to him so many times people here at Liverpool they love you and they want you to do well and you need to be patient.

I think he is showing that. He is being patient, but this guy has fire inside of him, he has a lot of desire to play more, to be decisive for the team, not as a selfish sort, but he really wants to help the team to make big things, to win games and to win trophies. This is the kind of mentality he has because this guy is on fire, and I hope he can keep this performance from now on.
