With just two days now remaining in the summer transfer window, the Reds are still looking to add a couple of players to their squad. One of the spots still in need of filling is undoubtedly an extra midfielder.
And according to GFFN, Liverpool have now been presented with an opportunity in that regard. They claim that Lokonga – who joined Arsenal for £17m in 2021 – has been ‘offered’ to the Reds by his representatives.
However, it appears that Liverpool aren’t especially interested in taking them up on that. It’s claimed that the Reds have no plans to seal a deal for the 23-year-old.
That sounds like being the end of that, then. If you don’t ask, you don’t get, we suppose.
Liverpool offered Lokonga chance
As Liverpool scour the market avidly for another midfielder, you can only imagine the kind of calls Jorg Schmadtke is taking.
With the whole world pretty much knowing exactly what they need, there must be a fair bit of this flying around. Unfortunately, it’s usually for the wrong kinds of players.
If it were Cheick Doucoure’s agent on the other line, or Ryan Gravenberch’s then happy days.
But Liverpool will be wary of another Arthur Melo type situation. They’d be well advised to steer well clear of any agent hawking their clients out at this late stage of the window.
Nevertheless, it does throw up the question of whether Liverpool should just get anyone in for the sake of it. They did that last year with Arthur, and were stung badly by it.
This year, their need for reinforcement is arguably even greater, though. Certainly they have less numbers now in midfield. And although they have more quality, they still can’t rely on the likes of Curtis Jones and Thiago Alcantara fitness-wise.
That leaves a lot of pressure on those players who remain to go week after week all season. With Arthur in the back of their minds though, Lokonga was never going to happen.
