David Silva dismisses Liverpool’s prospects of winning the Premier League as a Man City legend makes a prediction

Liverpool have started the Premier League campaign unbeaten but former Manchester City star David Silva isn't convinced

Former Manchester City midfielder David Silva has seemingly dismissed Liverpool’s chances of winning the Premier League title – despite their strong start to the season.

The Reds have taken 10 points from a possible 12 heading into the international break, a figure bettered only by City’s 100% record after four games and matched by Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United.

It is a vast improvement on last season when, at the same point, Liverpool sat on five points, trailing both Arsenal – top with maximum points – and City, who had 10 at the time. The Reds didn’t reach double figures until seven games in.

City ended up winning a fifth title in six years under Pep Guardiola by finishing five points clear of Arsenal, with Liverpool failing to claim a top-four berth for the first time since 2016.

And while the new-look Reds, bolstered by more than £150million-worth of summer midfield signings, have been impressive in the opening weeks, Silva – who was part of the City squads that went toe-to-toe with Jurgen Klopp’s side in the 2018/19 and 2019/20 campaigns – ultimately feels only the Gunners can again push his former club.

“Arsenal are the only team I can see who maybe have a chance of challenging City,” the Spaniard exclusively told the Mirror. “The rest? I don’t think they can.”

Taking into account the end of last season, Liverpool are now unbeaten in 15 games – the longest such ongoing sequence of any Premier League club.

Silva, who retired this summer after spending the last three seasons of his career at Real Sociedad, spent 10 years at City, winning 13 domestic honours. Internationally, he was part of the Spain side that won the World Cup and European Championship (twice).
