“Only God knows” – Everton player hasn’t yet made future decision, may continue with national side

Everton and Senegal midfielder Idrissa Gueye has refused to talk about his future with the national team.

weekend, the 33-year-old came off the bench in the 1-1 draw against Rwanda in the AFCON qualifiers, and he’s now preparing for the friendly tie against Algeria on Thursday.

On Tuesday, the Everton player spoke to reporters to preview the clash against Algeria, and his comments are relayed by Sene News. He was specifically asked if the next continental tournament in 2024 will be his last AFCON with Senegal.

Responding to that, he said: “Why do you want me to stop? Honestly, I don’t know, only God knows. We are here to represent our country, to compete. We are competitors and we are always happy to come to the national team.

“The question may arise but personally as long as the body allows, the coach needs me and the people need me, I will respond. So, we’ll see, the future will tell us.”

Since making his debut for Senegal in 2011, the Toffees midfielder has made over 100 appearances for the national team and was part of their squad that won the last edition of AFCON. His focus will certainly be on defending the trophy at the start of next year.

Gueye, who spent three years at Goodison Park between 2016 and 2019, returned to Everton in 2022, and has been a regular for them since then.
