The Egyptian assisted goals for Cody Gakpo and Andrew Robertson before also playing his part in Hugo Bueno’s stoppage-time own goal at Molineux.
Mohamed Salah was in imperious form as Liverpool fought back from 1-0 down against Wolves to win 3-1 and move top of the Premier League table, at least for a few hours.. The Reds fell behind early on thanks to Hwang Hee-chan’s goal following a defensive horror show, and they endured a terrible first 45 minutes.
However, Jurgen Klopp made multiple changes in the second half and Salah laid on two assists for Cody Gakpo and Andrew Robertson to turn the game on its head. He also passed to Harvey Elliott for the third goal, although his strike was ruled an own goal by Hugo Bueno following a deflection as the Reds secured all three points in stoppage time.
It wasn’t an easy day for Liverpool, but they will go back to Merseyside top of the table, however briefly that may last.
Goalkeeper & Defence
Alisson Becker (5/10):
Had to do better when Hwang shot from a narrow angle but let the ball squirm under him. His distribution was erratic throughout, too.
Joe Gomez (4/10):
Tormented by Neto at times in the first half but was let off the hook in the second period, as Wolves decided to retreat.
Joel Matip (5/10):
Absolutely skinned by Neto for Wolves’ first goal but made a superb block in the second half with the scores level.
Jarell Quansah (6/10):
His first full start for the Reds. Looked composed throughout and was Liverpool’s best defender in a difficult game. Subbed after sustaining a muscle injury.
Andrew Robertson (6/10):
Out of position for Hwang’s goal but delivered some superb crosses and scored the vital second goal after a move he started himself.
Midfield
Alexis Mac Allister (3/10):
Booked early on for a shirt pull and looked sloppy throughout the first half, with his touches and passes going nowhere. Clear he had played at altitude for Argentina in midweek, and was replaced by Luis Diaz at half-time. Liverpool need more from the summer signing.
Curtis Jones (5/10):
Anonymous in the first half but grew into the game as Wolves decided, bizarrely, to sit back.
Dominik Szoboszlai (6/10):
A shaky start, as he gave the ball away twice in the first few minutes but his quality is clear, and he was vital to the turnaround in the second half.
Attack
Cody Gakpo (6/10):
Endured a difficult first half but equalised in the second half, tapping home Salah’s excellent cross. Immediately substituted after scoring.
Diogo Jota (5/10):
Played a role in Gakpo’s equaliser, feeding the ball to Salah and was always willing to run, although he did not get the touches needed to test Sa. Subbed after the leveller.
Mohamed Salah (8/10):
Assisted Gakpo’s equaliser with a superb cross and then laid on a further assist for Robertson’s vital second. He also played the pass for the late Wolves own goal. Even when he isn’t scoring, he remains Liverpool’s key man.
Subs & Manager
Luis Diaz (6/10):
On as a half-time sub and immediately headed wide. Provided a different threat, and Wolves struggled with his pace.
Darwin Nunez (5/10):
Came on after Liverpool made it 1-1 and had multiple sights of goal, although his finishing deserted him.
Harvey Elliott (7/10):
Brought on to replace Jota. Weaved his way through the Wolves defence regularly and thought he had scored an excellent third from the edge of the box, although it was ruled an own goal.
Ibrahima Konate (6/10):
On for Quansah late on. Never troubled.
Ryan Gravenberch (N/A)
On in injury-time to replace the brilliant Salah.
Jurgen Klopp (7/10):
Liverpool may have been abysmal in the first half, but his substitutions changed the game, as the Reds roared back in style at Molineux.
