The Reds take on Leicester in the third round of this year’s Carabao Cup at Anfield on Wednesday night.
After a superb start the season – and a big game coming on Sunday against Tottenham Hotspur, Jurgen Klopp is set to heavily rotate his XI. And looking at those who could be in-line for a start, the Liverpool ECHO put Clark forward as an option.
They suggest that the nature of Sunday’s clash with Spurs could mean that Klopp decides to put out a slightly ‘weaker’ side than he normally would.
As a result, it’s claimed that Clark might be one of those to benefit.
The 18-year-old won’t be the only fringe player looking to make a rare appearance, though. The ECHO predict Wataru Endo to start at the base of the midfield, with Ryan Gravenberch and Harvey Elliott also ‘in with a shout.’
Elsewhere, Jarell Quansah, Ben Doak and Stefan Bajcetic are other young prospects named as possible starters.
Sunday’s trip to face Spurs will be Liverpool’s biggest test of the season so far. Ange Postecoglou’s side have started the season brilliantly and sit two points and two positions below the Reds in fourth.
Although Liverpool have an excellent record at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, it’ll be a really tough game.
Nevertheless, you feel that Klopp has plenty of options at his disposal who need game time without turning to youngsters. Especially in midfield.
The likes of Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister are certain to be rested. But beyond that pair, Liverpool have four or five senior midfielders who could do with the minutes.
As the ECHO point out, Gravenberch and Endo are two who certainly fall into that category. It would be surprise if they don’t take up two of the three slots tomorrow.
The final one could perhaps be filled by Elliott, although it may be that Klopp shifts him into the attack. If he does, Bajcetic could be the beneficiary.
However, with the Spaniard having played at right-back against LASK last week, maybe we should expect to see him deployed there again. If all of the above happens, it would be nice to see Clark given a go. Klopp described him as ‘really interesting’ not too long ago [liverpoolfc.com], maybe it’s time to let him loose.
