After the VAR incident against Spurs, Pep Guardiola has a direct message for Liverpool: “It’s done.”

Man City boss Pep Guardiola has been asked about VAR again after his comments earlier in the week about the goal that Liverpool was denied against Tottenham.

As the fallout continues from Liverpool’s controversial defeat against Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has weighed in on the VAR mistake that denied the Reds a legitimate goal. While acknowledging the error, Guardiola believes that Liverpool must simply ‘accept’ the decision, though he hopes for improvements in VAR standards.

The incident in question occurred when Luis Díaz’s goal was incorrectly ruled out by VAR, leading to a 2-1 loss for Liverpool. The VAR officials at Stockley Park made a “significant human error,” as evident from the audio footage revealing miscommunication between the on-field referee and the VAR hub.

Jürgen Klopp, Liverpool’s manager, expressed his frustration during a press conference and said that a replay of the match would be fair, if highly unlikely. The standard of officiating and the use of VAR have been subjects of scrutiny in recent times. As a result, Darren England and Dan Cook, the officials involved in the controversial decision, were stood down from their roles for subsequent Premier League fixtures.

Guardiola, however, chose not to delve into the ongoing conversation surrounding VAR. He stated that the outcome of the match is now “done” and emphasized the need to accept the mistake. While acknowledging that humans can make errors, Guardiola highlighted that VAR was introduced to reduce such mistakes and ensure fairness in the game.

“I said before the game in the Champions League, so it’s done. It was a mistake, accept it,” he told reporters. “It’s always difficult, humans can make mistakes but the machines have to do it — the VAR is there to reduce that (mistake).

“All the humans make the mistakes, we do. At the end, the machines had been (introduced) for human beings so it’s a mistake, hopefully it’s finished here, getting better and improve (from) that.

“The Premier League or people from VAR will improve at that to avoid and the reason it’s there is for a fair game. The VAR was implemented to make our game more right. Hopefully will be better in the future.”

The controversy surrounding VAR has been a recurring theme in football discussions. While it was intended to provide clarity and minimize errors, its implementation has faced criticism due to inconsistent decisions and lengthy delays during matches. The incident involving Liverpool and Tottenham has reignited the debate on the effectiveness of VAR and the need for better officiating standards.

As the Premier League and VAR officials continue to review and refine the system, it is hoped that future incidents will be minimized, ensuring a fair and transparent game for all teams involved. The goal is to strike a balance between human judgment and technological assistance, ultimately enhancing the overall quality of football matches.
