Unexpected interest from Chelsea in a Bundesliga striker

Chelsea are expressing a strong interest in securing the services of Lois Openda from RB Leipzig in the upcoming January transfer window despite the striker joining the Bundesliga club just in the summer.

Spanish outlet Fichajes reports that Chelsea are considering a substantial offer for Openda in the months ahead, even though the 23-year-old recently joined RB Leipzig.

The attacker has enjoyed a hugely impressive start to life in Germany. Openda has notched five goals, including one against

City in his side’s 3-1 loss to the Premier League champions, and two assists across all competitions this campaign so far.

It is thought that Chelsea are big fans of Openda, but it will be tricky to persuade Leipzig to let go of a player they recently took on. The club are typically open to moving on players to the Premier League – but only if a reasonable fee is forthcoming.

Openda can operate anywhere across the front three, meaning that he will grant them a tactical edge if he were to join up at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea bought in Nicolas Jackson during the summer transfer window – while they also purchased Christopher Nkunku, but the Frenchman is currently sidelined due to injury.
