Scott McTominay claims that heroics by Brentford were inspired by two Manchester United icons.

Scott McTominay scored a dramatic injury-time brace to secure victory for Manchester United in their Premier League clash against Brentford last weekend.

The Scotland international was introduced to the pitch in the last minutes of the game as Erik ten Hag’s side trailed and were about to record three defeats in a row going into the international break.

United were 1-0 down and did not look like scoring until McTominay’s brilliant touch and volley in the 93rd minute gave them a lifeline.

It was only four minutes later, in the last moments of the game, that the midfielder managed to head home to make history at Old Trafford and win the game.

United’s first Premier League victory when entering the 90th minute losing the game. It was a special moment that Ten Hag believes needs to push the team on to change momentum, after a poor start to the campaign.

McTominay was delighted with the victory and the impact he made in ‘Fergie Time’ and took inspiration from David Beckham’s new documentary and Sir Alex Ferguson.

“Two goals at the death was incredible — that might be one of my favourite moments on a football pitch,” said McTominay.

“It’s hard to put into words because I’ve been at Man United my whole life, since I was five years old. For me, this football club means everything. I was watching David Beckham’s documentary last night and it’s things like that that inspire. [Sir Alex] was always looking at his watch like that. It just shows today you can score a last-minute winner. It’s brilliant.”

The impact from McTominay was not only surprising because of the in-game circumstances, but also due to his status in the squad. He has been way down in the pecking order, especially after first-team additions of Mason Mount and Sofyan Amrabat in the summer, and seemed close to leaving the club in the summer transfer window.

“When there is the right price then every player has a price but he has a big value, sporting and also economic,” said Ten Hag when asked about the Scottish midfielder’s transfer situation in the summer.

“I want to have a player like Scott McTominay in the squad. He is Man United in every way. Every minute he will fight for the match.”

United have already lost six games this term and it would’ve been even worse if McTominay did not save the day on Saturday.

“The players know how far they have to go to get results,” added Ten Hag. “It can’t be easygoing. In football, it is eat or get eaten. Too many times in the first half of this season we got eaten by opponents who are more hungry. This can’t be.”
