Manchester United returned to winning ways in dramatic circumstances on Saturday after beating Brentford 2-1.

Erik ten Hag’s side left it late at Old Trafford, having conceded a sloppy goal to Mathias Jensen in the first half. They looked set for a seventh defeat of the season until Scott McTominay, on as a substitute in the 87th minute, levelled three minutes into added time.

And the Scotland international wasn’t done, heading home in the 97th minute to hand United a crucial win and alleviate some of the pressure. They can now go into the international break with some optimism, and MEN Sport has taken a look at what they will return to compared to their Premier League rivals.

United’s next six league fixtures

  • Sheffield United (A) – October 21
  • Manchester City (H) – October 29
  • Fulham (A) – November 4
  • Luton Town (H) – November 11
  • Everton (A) – November 25
  • Newcastle United (A) – December 2

Verdict: United return from their international break and head to Bramall Lane to face Sheffield United, which should present Ten Hag’s side with the chance to record consecutive league wins for the first time this season – albeit with a fortnight between them. That would be ideal preparation for the Manchester derby the following weekend.

The Reds then have three more winnable games on paper, facing three relegation candidates in Fulham, Luton and Everton before travelling to St James’ Park to face Newcastle. Ten Hag would expect to win at least four of his side’s next six, with momentum from those utilised in the two big games against their main rivals.
