Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai has emphatically answered rumours that he has a Steven Gerrard tattoo.
The Reds new No.8 has been relentlessly compared to Gerrard since arriving on Merseyside this summer. And with good reason too, there’s more than a little of Liverpool’s captain fantastic in the Hungarian’s game.
And now, while taking part in a ‘Hot or Not?’ challenge for Liverpool’s official YouTube channel, Szoboszlai has confirmed that he has a permanent reminder of Stevie G on his arm.
Answering, ‘Hot’ to what his views are on body-art, Szoboszlai displayed the ink on his left forearm to Diogo Jota and Joel Matip, who both answered ‘Not.’ “You explain to us why you have them,” said Jota.
“I actually have one from Gerrard,” said the 22-year-old, to the surprise of Jota.
“You have one from Gerrard?!” answered the Portuguese, with a mix of shock and admiration.
“Yeah, this one. If you can read it I’ll give you a lot of money because it’s in Hungarian!” laughed Szoboszlai.
Szoboszlai admits Gerrard ink
The tattoo in question is reportedly a quote from Stevie G during his playing days. Whether Gerrard did or did not say those exact words is debatable, but also irrelevant.
The intention of the tattoo from Szoboszlai is clear – he got it in the knowledge that it was a link to Liverpool’s former No.8.
Now, when he got the ink, there was obviously no way Szoboszlai knew he’d be ending up playing for Liverpool, let alone wearing Gerrard’s old number.
But it’s just another insight into exactly why the former RB Leipzig man has been able to settle in so seamlessly at his new club.
Szoboszlai was made for this football club, whether he knew that consciously or not.
To our knowledge, no one has yet asked the Hungary captain about comparisons to Gerrard since his time at the club so far.
But with this little piece of information once again circulating, and with performances on the pitch continuing to be excellent, it surely won’t be long before they do.
