Bayer Leverkusen have an agreement that would allow Xabi Alonso to join Liverpool next summer.
Alonso has been doing an incredible job at Leverkusen since taking over this time last year. After seven games of the Bundesliga season, his team sit top of the table with six wins and a draw to their name.
This fantastic start to his coaching career has seen all sorts of speculation that he could be in-line for the top job at Liverpool or Real Madrid. And according to Sport BILD via Get German Football News, this is something that could become a reality.
They claim that the German side have already agreed with Alonso that he can leave should one of his former clubs come in for him, starting from next year.
As well as covering approaches from Liverpool and Madrid, the 41-year-old will reportedly be allowed to leave without a fight if Bayern Munich come in for him, too.
Alonso has Liverpool agreement
Obviously, unless something goes badly wrong, there’s no way Liverpool will be exercising this with Leverkusen next summer.
Unfortunately, it would seem pretty cut and dry that Alonso will be on his way to Madrid instead.
With Carlo Ancelotti set to leave the Spanish giants at the end of the season, they’ll be on the lookout for a coach. Even if he wasn’t an ex-player of there’s, Alonso would look like an outstanding candidate to replace the Italian.
The job the World Cup winner has done with Leverkusen has been remarkable. Why wouldn’t Madrid want a slice of that?
Perhaps they’ll face some competition from Bayern, who may well decide to take a punt on Xabi if he pips them to the Bundesliga title.
But in terms of Liverpool, they’ll happily wait and see what Alonso’s situation is if and when they need to find Jurgen Klopp’s successor.
A move to Madrid or indeed Bayern could make that tricky for 2026. But who knows what the future holds. One thing that is clear to take from all of this is that Xabi won’t let anything stop him if Liverpool do come calling.
