James Maddison passed off his Instagram story featuring Trent Alexander-Arnold mocking Liverpool’s controversial defeat at Tottenham Hotspur as “tongue-in-cheek banter.”
The fallout of Liverpool’s loss at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on September 30 – the club’s first since April 1 – lingers.. Every other day there appears something new popping up and the latest was Maddison’s taunt towards Alexander-Arnold.
With England the duo linking up for international duty, it didn’t take long for the Spurs summer signing to reference last month’s meeting with the Reds, captioning an Instagram story featuring the two national team-mates with “still asking for a replay.”
This is, of course, in response to Jurgen Klopp’s publicly-stated preference that a rematch take place after null and voiding the 2-1 result in favour of Tottenham, due to the fact Luis Diaz’s goal was incorrectly disallowed due to a VAR blunder.
But Maddison has insisted their conversation in reality was not about the Premier League match and he was only having some fun with Alexander-Arnold.
Nah, the conversation wasn’t anything to do with that,” the 26-year-old told talkSPORT. “Just having a bit of banter with Trent.
“Trent is a good friend of mine, we get on really well. Tongue-in-cheek banter! That game is in the past, we were just having a little mess around.”
Whether that match does in fact remain in the past is yet to be seen, though, with no official word of a replay after what Klopp said over a week ago.
