We’ve got confidence and everyone knows the significance of the Merseyside derby’

Niamh Fahey detailed Liverpool FC Women’s motivation heading into today’s Merseyside derby with Everton Women at Anfield.

The Reds are looking to maintain their perfect start to the Barclays Women’s Super League season in the 4.30pm BST kick-off, having defeated Arsenal Women and Aston Villa Women in the opening two games.

Everton ran out 3-0 winners in the fixture at L4 last term – but Fahey believes Matt Beard’s side are well equipped to reverse the result against their local rivals this time around.

The LFC Women captain writes in the matchday programme: “We know we don’t have a great record at Anfield and a big part of our remit this season is making sure we get a win here in the Merseyside derby.

“We’re really looking forward to this one and everyone knows the significance and the run that we’ve had at Anfield, so we want to start putting that right.

“As we all know, last season’s game here didn’t go to plan, but I think the team has grown a lot since then.

“It was our first time as a group back in the WSL, so there were a lot of nerves and expectations. Now we’ve had that year of being in the WSL and we’ve had the experience and confidence of having a good start and become more used to playing in front of big crowds in big stadiums.

don’t think it will be like last season in terms of the impact of playing at Anfield and we’re in a good moment now. Everyone’s looking forward to this weekend and to playing at such a wonderful stadium in front of all our supporters.

“We know that derbies often take on a life of their own and it is a different game and we have to be ready for that, but I think this team is resilient and strong and our confidence is good.

“So without leaning too much on past results, we’re going into this game with a lot of confidence and ready to put in a strong performance.”

Fahey continued: “Finally, this fixture will see Tash Dowie honoured with a guard of honour and a mosaic recognising her 47 goals for Liverpool FC Women. I think that’s pretty cool.

She represented both clubs with distinction during her fine career and while I know she’d love to still be out there with her boots on, I’m sure that having a mosaic at Anfield is the next best thing!

“She’s a lifelong Red and our record goalscorer, so there’s no better person than Tash to have recognised at Anfield. It’s a special thing and well deserved for an incredible footballer and servant for Liverpool.”
