Ineos considering former Liverpool man for key role at Man United

Former Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards, who received huge praise for his work at Anfield, is under consideration to be brought in at Manchester United.

Michael Edwards is a name that has been discussed by INEOS if their 25 per cent stake in Manchester United is approved this week.

The Glazer family are set to meet this Thursday to vote on whether the 25 per cent stake in the club that Sir Jim Ratcliffe is reportedly after is in their best interests.

It comes after months of tough negotiations and it seems Ratcliffe and INEOS are already working on some of the sporting decisions they are keen to make.

Despite not owning a majority of the football club yet, one of the key requirements is that INEOS have a say in all the sporting decisions made at Old Trafford with the Glazers set to take a ‘backseat’.

According to a report from The Athletic, INEOS are keen to make their own footballing appointments with Ratcliffe believing, when he toured Old Trafford and Carrington earlier this year, that a more streamlined approach is required.

A few names have come up in relation to United making an appointment in a sporting director role to assist Erik ten Hag when it comes to transfers.

Paul Mitchell, formerly of AS Monaco, is the main name in the frame but another name has come up and it may surprise you.

As mentioned, Edwards, who was significant during Jurgen Klopp’s reign at Liverpool is a name also under consideration.

The story goes that, according to the Liverpool Echo, originally Julian Brandt was the man Klopp coveted for Liverpool but they instead pivoted and signed the former Chelsea flop Mohamed Salah, it’s fair to say that has been the right decision.

Well, the reason for this change was apparently Edwards’ influence and determination that Salah was the man for them.

This may be the exact foil that Ten Hag needs. Edwards and Ten Hag could turn out to be the perfect partnership at Old Trafford but it is unclear whether the former Liverpool man would return to football.
