Manchester United could reportedly drop their interest in signing Goncalo Inacio, with Liverpool scouting the defender this week.
According to journalist Graeme Bailey, the Red Devils might soon move on from the Portuguese international due to Inacio being a left-footed player.
United spent big last year to sign Lisandro Martinez, who has since made the left-central defensive spot his own since reuniting with Erik Ten Hag at Old Trafford.
As a result, Liverpool could be favourites to sign Inacio, with the Reds keen to sign a young defender in January to add to their ranks going into 2024.
Bailey said: “Inacio is a left-footed centre-half at Sporting Lisbon, fantastic player, we know Manchester United have looked but I personally doubt that United, when they do go for a centre-half, will go for a left-footer.
“So I do wonder if United would be spending £60m on someone like him. Ignacio has a lot of English clubs looking at him, he’s a wonderful talent, and our understanding is that Liverpool were in attendance as Portugal beat Bosnia 5-0.”
Inacio is easily one of the highest rated young defenders currently plying their trade in Europe, and for Liverpool, United potentially dropping out of the race for the centre-back is big.
The Reds are aware that a new central defender in January could be massive in the title race, and Inacio fits the bill perfectly for what Liverpool are looking for.
And with United being foolish enough to potentially drop their interest in Inacio, there’s a chance for Liverpool to make a statement in 2024 with the Portuguese international.
