Jurgen Klopp has admitted that Liverpool have a new injury issue ahead of tomorrow’s Merseyside Derby.
The Reds were set to be missing six players for Everton’s trip to Anfield. However, with Cody Gakpo and Caoimhin Kelleher back sooner than expected, Liverpool were looking better.
However, speaking in his pre-match press conference today, Klopp says two more players have been struck down. Ben Doak will play no part, and neither will Luke Chambers.
“Cody trained once with the team, so we have to see how that looks for tomorrow,” said the manager, when asked about Gakpo’s early return.
“Stefan [Bajcetic] out, Thiago out. Ben Doak has a little muscle thing, so we have to see, but not available for the weekend.
“Luke Chambers trains today first time after a little ligament issue. Conor Bradley still out, that’s it.”
Not good news for the youngsters, but at least no further issues amongst Klopp’s starting XI.
This obviously isn’t the worst injury news Jurgen could have given ahead of tomorrow’s derby.
But given that the manager also confirmed that Andy Robertson will undergo surgery on his dislocated shoulder, Chambers’ issue in particular could have further ramifications.
With Kostas Tsimikas set to step in, the 19-year-old may be needed in Europa League and Carabao Cup games.
It’s a big opportunity for the academy youngster and one he won’t want to pass up.
In that respect it’s good to hear that he’ll at least be able to train today, even if he can’t take his place on the bench tomorrow.
As for Doak, he already had to come back from a slight issue at the end of last season. The 17-year-old will also have his eye on game time in the cup competitions and won’t want to miss too long.
Again, for tomorrow it shouldn’t have too many consequences. But let’s hope that both are back before long.
