Dominik Szoboszlai: “I had to give it a try when Liverpool came.”

Dominik Szoboszlai has opened up on his enjoyment playing as part of a new-look Liverpool squad under Jürgen Klopp this season.

The Hungarian has enjoyed an excellent start since his summer move to Anfield from RB Leipzig, making a big impact in his 17 appearances for the Reds so far.

And having settled in well on Merseyside, the 23-year-old has revealed his feelings upon seeing the quality within Klopp’s side for the first time.

“It’s crazy,” Szoboszlai told Football Focus during a recent interview. “When I came, [in] the first days I was like, ‘Am I on PlayStation or something?!’

“It was great to know them and how they are, not only from the television. To play with them is even better.”

Having been handed the No.8 shirt at Liverpool, and having shown a propensity for spectacular goals and passes, comparisons have inevitably been made between Szoboszlai and Anfield legend Steven Gerrard, a fact the midfielder acknowledges with a smile.

“I don’t want to be him, I want to be myself,” he said. “But of course if they put a paper in front of me now and say you’re going to have the same impact or the same career here in Liverpool, I’m going to sign it directly!”

Reflecting on his decision to swap Leipzig for Liverpool, after two-and-a-half years in Germany, Szoboszlai added: “To be honest, I was thinking, ‘Is it the right timing?’ This was the only thing I was thinking of. Not [if it was] the right choice, the right timing.

“Am I ready to come to the Premier League and play for Liverpool? And I said to myself, ‘Always when something big comes you never know you are ready, [so] you have to try.’

“And if I don’t try, it will always be in my mind why I didn’t go. So I just said, ‘Let’s do it, let’s see, I’m going to be ready.’”

Szoboszlai is, along with Alexis Mac Allister, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch, part of a Reds midfield that has been rebuilt in recent months.

The Hungary captain sees it as a challenge, rather than a source of pressure, to follow in the footsteps of players who achieved greatness for the club.

“A lot of players left from midfield and I didn’t look at this like, ‘Ah, it’s going to be hard,’” he said. “No, let’s just do it.

“It’s a motivation, let’s show [what we can do]. We are good football players, so if we know each other, with time it’s going to be even better.”
