Manchester United suffered their 13th defeat of the season so far following their 2-0 loss to West Ham United thanks to goals from Jarrod Bowen and ex-Erik ten Hag man Mohammed Kudus.
Despite all of the possession, the Red Devils just could not break down West Ham and part of the reason behind this was their struggles in midfield.
Once again, Kobbie Mainoo was bossing things in the middle of the park but his teammate Scott McTominay continued to struggle and Paul Scholes believes United are missing one man.
Speaking on TNT Sports in the aftermath of the defeat against David Moyes’ side, the former United midfielder named two players whose crucial connection in the middle of the park is being felt by the Red Devils.
“The only time I saw a connection in this team was between Bruno Fernandes and Christian Eriksen,” Scholes said.
“Eriksen has missed a lot of the season. That has to come back.”
Christian Eriksen was back on the bench for the Red Devils against West Ham for the first time after suffering a nasty-looking injury during United’s 1-0 win over Luton Town at Old Trafford.
Since then, McTominay has featured for the Red Devils and looks to be one of Ten Hag’s key men despite the Scottish midfielder being on the verge of leaving the club.
Mainoo has also come into the team and looks to be a key part of Ten Hag’s plans, you do wonder, if he is fully fit, where the Danish midfielder fits into the team.
Throughout the majority of last season, prior to the midfielder’s injury he suffered against Reading in the FA Cup, a midfield of Bruno Fernandes and Eriksen was commonplace.
The pair worked well together but the worry with the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder was that he longer had the legs to be able to get up and down for the Red Devils.
However, with McTominay struggling at the moment to make an impact, Eriksen could be the key man to come back into the team once he is back fit. He deserves his chance,
