Burnley manager Vincent Kompany claimed that his side was a ‘danger’ to Liverpool during his 2-0 defeat in the Premier League on Tuesday. But the Clarets were only let off by poor finishing and decision-making from the Reds in the final third.
“We were a little too open in the first half,” the Burnley boss told Amazon Prime Video after the final whistle. “We were still dangerous in transition opportunities but we just didn’t find the final ball or make the right decision.
“At times, we were in numbers counter-attacking. The difference is how they scored the goal, we weren’t able to do the same thing. We kept being dangerous and we had a chance. If that goes in then it is 1-1 but unfortunately, the game opens up and they are so good in those moments.”
Kompany was also asked about the disallowed Harvey Elliott goal. Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp was unhappy that an offside was called because Mohamed Salah had been pushed into the line of the goalkeeper, who would have been unlikely to save the shot anyway. Amazon presenter Dan Walker asked Kompany for his take.
“Are you asking me to be non-biased?” the former Manchester City captain responded. “It is a bigger picture discussion for me. We have had a lot of conversations where in these moments, things have gone against us.
“I understand Jürgen’s opinion and position but from my perspective, how many times I’ve been here saying that it cost us points, they got the win. We have to move on to the next game.”
Klopp has expressed his frustration at the use of VAR. The German explained that only someone who had not played football before could rule out a goal in that manner. But the assistant referee and the VAR can only go by the rules of the game. While it might have felt harsh or unfortunate, by the letter of the law, Salah was in an offside position and in the line of sight of James Trafford.
