Levi Colwill is highly desired by Liverpool.

Liverpool are reportedly still plotting an ambitious transfer swoop for Chelsea defender Levi Colwill, but they face a major roadblock early on due to the Blues’ hardline stance.

According to 90min, Liverpool are reportedly still keen on an ambitious potential transfer move for Chelsea defender Levi Colwill, despite the fact that he recently signed a new long-term deal at Stamford Bridge.

Having joined Chelsea at the age of eight, Levi Colwill progressed through the club’s youth ranks and spent the 2021/22 season on loan at Huddersfield, amassing 29 Championship appearances and helping the team reach the play-off final.

The 22-year-old spent last season on loan at Brighton & Hove Albion, and the Englishman was superb for the South Coast side, while he played a pivotal role in the England U-21s’ triumph in the European Championship, their first in 39 years. His rock-solid and stellar ball-playing displays led to interest from Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool over the summer.

Chelsea rejected the approach and instead managed to tie the 20-year-old down to a new long-term deal until 2029, with an option for an additional year.

Despite the Blues’ sitting in ninth place in the Premier League after a sluggish start to the season, Colwill has been a consistent performer this term, making 26 appearances and providing two goals under the tutelage of Mauricio Pochettino. However, he has largely been played out of position at left back due to a number of injury setbacks within the Chelsea squad.

Liverpool still retain an interest in the now senior England international, but the London club will not entertain any offers for their player, intending to keep him in their ranks for the foreseeable future.

While Chelsea remain steadfast in their not-for-sale stance as far as Colwill is concerned, there is a sense that the situation could change if the situation doesn’t improve and he continues to be utilised out of his natural position at left-back, something that could even result in the player pushing for a move away in search of regular minutes in his preferred role.

The Reds are exploring the centre-back market, especially given Joel Matip’s contract at the end of the season. Matip will miss the rest of the season after suffering an ACL injury in Liverpool’s 4-3 win against Fulham on December 3, and no talks between the club and Matip have been opened yet.

With star centre-back Virgil van Dijk set to turn 33 years old soon, the Merseysiders’ summer plans could feature signing two new centre-backs. Considering their long-standing interest in Colwill, they might as well test Chelsea’s resolve over yet another homegrown talent by tabling a tempting offer on the table late in the winter transfer window.
