Hours after Al-Ettifaq’s departure, former Liverpool player Jordan Henderson breaks the record at Ajax.

Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has already broken a record after joining Ajax from Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq this week with his contract ended.

Jordan Henderson’s shirt is already the fastest-selling player shirt in Ajax history, according to reports from the Netherlands. The former Liverpool captain made the move to the Eredivisie this week.

The former Liverpool midfielder decided to leave Anfield last summer after accepting a lucrative offer from Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq. Henderson was joined by former teammate Georginio Wijnaldum and Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard — who is the head coach of the club — but has since cut his time in Saudi Arabia short just six months after joining.

Henderson, 33, has now signed a two-and-a-half-year deal at Ajax in the January transfer window after Al-Ettifaq agreed to terminate his deal at the club. “I’m sad to say that I will be leaving Al Ettifaq with immediate effect,” Henderson said on his social media accounts.

“It wasn’t an easy decision but one that I feel is best for me and my family. I want to take this opportunity to thank the club and the fans for all the support during my time. I felt the love from day one. I’ll keep watching and hoping for your success. Good luck for the future.”

The England international will wear the number six for his new club with shirts already flying off the shelves since his arrival was officially announced. According to Ajax Life, Henderson’s shirt is the fastest-selling player shirt in the history of the club, which always measures the volume of sales for each new signing that arrives at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

The former Liverpool captain has supposedly sold more jerseys in one day than the signings of Daley Blind and Dušan Tadić generated in one week. Henderson had previously worn the number 14 throughout his career, but ‘fully understands’ why he would not be given it at Ajax given the history surrounding the shirt. Number six was available following the departure of Davy Klaassen to Inter Milan in 2023.
