Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has made the decision to leave Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq after just six months. He has opted to join Dutch giant Ajax on a two-and-a-half-year contract. This unexpected move has raised eyebrows.
Henderson’s departure from Liverpool last July was already a controversial decision, as he chose to join the Saudi Pro League for its financial benefits. However, he also expressed his intention to use his influence to improve the sporting landscape and promote inclusivity, particularly for the LGBTQ+ community.
Under the guidance of Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, Henderson had initially committed to Al-Ettifaq. But now, he has made a U-turn and signed with Ajax until 2026. This sudden change has left Al-Ettifaq president Samer Al Misehal disappointed and questioning Henderson’s commitment to the team.
In a press release, Al Misehal thanked Henderson for his efforts but emphasized the need for unity and commitment from all players and staff. He made it clear that the club expects strong performances in the second half of the season under Gerrard’s coaching, with the Liverpool legend having just signed a two-year contract extension.
“Firstly, the club would like to thank Jordan for his efforts and wish him the best for his future endeavors,” Al Misehal said. “We are always respectful of our players. The club and Jordan believe this quick decision, without any delay or further distraction, has been made for both the overall good of the club and for Jordan.”
Henderson, for his part, hopes that his move to Ajax will increase his chances of being selected for England’s squad in the upcoming European Championships. He expressed gratitude towards Al-Ettifaq and its fans while acknowledging the hard work being put in by the club.
Ajax manager John van’t Schip welcomed Henderson’s arrival, highlighting his experience and leadership qualities. He believes that Henderson’s presence will greatly benefit the team both on and off the pitch, especially considering his achievements with Liverpool, including winning the Champions League.
“We wanted an experienced midfielder with leadership qualities,” Van’t Schip said. “Partially due to injuries in the team, we were looking for someone who could step in immediately. Jordan Henderson is that type of player.”
This unexpected transfer has left Al-Ettifaq in disarray, as it now faces the challenge of regaining momentum and finding a suitable replacement for Henderson. But the exit could free up some room in the budget to make more signings to improve the squad.
The debate now arises as to whether Jordan Henderson should be included in England’s Euro 2024 squad. The decision rests with Gareth Southgate, who will undoubtedly consider Henderson’s performance at Ajax and his overall contribution to the national team.
