“They are superior”: Pep Guardiola clarifies his “feeling” on the title fight and concedes to Liverpool

Liverpool restored its cushion at the top of the table last night, thrashing Chelsea 4-1. Pep Guardiola has noticed the form of Jürgen Klopp's outfit.

Liverpool is flying at the moment. Not even the news of Jürgen Klopp’s departure has been able to unsettle the team, which still counts the VAR farce at Spurs as its only league defeat of the season.

Yesterday’s result was the most resounding of the lot, with Chelsea finally put to the sword after seven consecutive draws. It’s a result that had been coming, and was all the more satisfying for that, especially as Liverpool tries to improve its big-six record for the campaign.

Despite rattling off 11 shots, Darwin Núñez was not among the scorers, but he did lay on a goal for Luis Díaz. There was also another goal for Diogo Jota, and a header for Dominik Szoboszlai, but it was all about Conor Bradley really.

Kicking off 45 minutes earlier, Manchester City also took care of business, moving to an aggregate score of 46-2 in its last 13 matches against Burnley. It was a relatively routine outing for Pep Guardiola’s side, who remain five points adrift of Liverpool with a game in hand.

That could make the meeting between Liverpool and Manchester City at Anfield in March a truly vital occasion. There are plenty of points to be won and lost both before and after that meeting, but Pep Guardiola has admitted he cannot envisage too many slip-ups from Klopp and his side.

“When we won a lot of games in a row, we had that feeling that Liverpool would not drop points. Now we see that they are winning comfortably, so we have to be ready,” he said, via Liverpool World.

“The players know it. We push each other and until the end we will try to do the same. It’s not just three [teams], Tottenham and Aston Villa are still there. But my feeling when I see Arsenal playing is they control many aspects of the game. When you see Liverpool, every game they are better than the opponent. You can lose games but they are better. I know how strong they are but still we are there.

“I don’t have the feeling [Liverpool and Arsenal] are going to drop much points. We have to win as many games as possible and at the end we’ll see what happens.”
