ROME (AP) — Carlos Alcaraz, ranked third, confirmed his withdrawal from the Italian Open on Friday due to a right forearm issue that had previously forced him to withdraw from tournaments in Monte Carlo and Barcelona.

The announcement comes two days after Alcaraz’s quest for a third Madrid Open crown ended in a three-set loss against Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals.

“After playing in Madrid, I experienced some discomfort in my arm. “I did some tests today and discovered that I have muscle edema in my pronator teres as a result of my recent injury,” Alcaraz stated on his social media platforms. “Unfortunately, I will be unable to play in Rome. I need to rest so that I can fully recuperate and play without pain.”
