Trey Lance, the current quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, has had one of the most interesting careers in recent memory. The North Dakota product burst out at the collegiate level in 2019, but he never had the opportunity to build on that success. Lance declared for the NFL Draft in 2021 after the COVID-19 epidemic basically ended his 2020 season. Despite the absence of tape, the 49ers elected to risk their future and trade up for a player they thought could be a superstar. Lance made only four starts for the 49ers before losing his spot to seventh-round pick Brock Purdy.

Trey Lance may be given another opportunity to start in the NFL, but it is unlikely to be with the Dallas Cowboys. Barring injury, Prescott is firmly established as the franchise’s starting quarterback. While the former fourth-round pick is due to enter free agency after the 2024 season, it’s difficult to imagine a scenario in which Dallas lets him depart for free. Lance, meanwhile, is due to hit the open market, and Dallas will most likely lack the financial resources to bring both players back
Given that he only received a fourth-round pick in a trade, it’s safe to assume that nobody will let Trey Lance be their undisputed starter. Having said that, the former third-round pick might earn the right to compete for a starting position, or at the very least get a contract as a high-end backup.
