A Kansas City woman pleaded guilty to a money laundering scam.
Kansas City, Missouri (KOAM) A Kansas City woman has pleaded guilty to laundering more than $240,000 she illegally stole as part of an email compromise scam.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Missouri, Brianna S. Graves, 30, renounced her right to a Grand Jury and pleaded guilty to one count of money laundering.
According to court records, ETS Contracting, based in New York, was negotiating a contract with a vendor who was in communication with the firm by email. On December 12, 2022, ETS received an email containing payment instructions to wire $240,926 to a J.P. Morgan Chase Bank account. They thought the email was from the vendor company’s owner, but it was actually from a
According to the US Attorney’s Office, ETS Contracting authorized the payment on December 18, 2022, and the funds were deposited into the account on December 19th. Graves truly owned the bank account. Graves received a cashier’s check for the whole amount and deposited it in another bank account.
On June 26, 2023, federal authorities served a warrant and seized $41,574 from Grave’s bank account.
According to court documents, Graves’ plea agreement requires her to pay $240,926 in restitution and forfeit $240,926, the proceeds of the crime. Graves faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison without parole.
