Just In: Has Texas won a national cham…See more

In Oklahoma City, Texas has the opportunity to create history, and the Longhorns can do it in the most fulfilling way imaginable. In addition to offering Texas the opportunity to spoil the Sooners’ hopes of winning four straight titles, a rematch with Big 12 (and soon-to-be SEC) opponent Oklahoma in the Women’s College World Series Final may also provide the Longhorns with a chance to get revenge for their 2022 championship defeat to Oklahoma.

Although Texas shouldn’t overlook Oklahoma, there’s no denying that the Sooners appear a little more exposed than they were a season ago. They lost Game 1 on Monday and narrowly avoided defeat in Game 2 on Tuesday to prolong their season, barely surviving a scare from Florida in the semifinals. The undisputed champion team in the league since their three-peat started in 2021, Oklahoma saw its stellar run of titles come to an end at the hands of the Longhorns and lost to Texas for the top spot.

This is a look at Texas’s championship past, which may change this week.

With no softball championship to their name, Texas has an opportunity for the Longhorns to create history in Oklahoma City. Texas has five more Women’s College World Series berths beyond 2022 and 2024. The Longhorns made four trips back to the WCWS: in 1998, 2003, 2005, 2006, and 2013. Texas had only ever made it to the Final once, so winning a championship in Oklahoma City would unquestionably be the program’s high point. Since 2019, Texas has qualified for five straight super regionals (2020 was canceled due to COVID-19). Although the Longhorns are improving, it would be a very sad way to cap off an amazing season if they were unable to win that elusive first title this year.
