During the last nine months or so, the Dallas Cowboys have made an effort to persuade their supporters, players, and even themselves that Trevor Lance, the quarterback from the 49ers that they acquired through a trade at the conclusion of last summer’s training camp, was a possible replacement for star starter Dak Prescott.
It hasn’t taken the Cowboys long to demonstrate that. At least not yet. The rubber is already hitting the road, though, as clubs start getting ready for 2024’s training camp and mandated workouts get began. The Cowboys’ only chance to gain leverage in this circumstance is to sell Lance as a potential future starter because Prescott is due for a contract extension, which will remain on hold. Real decisions will eventually need to be made if the team wishes to keep up this farce while the Prescott situation lingers. If the current circumstances persist over the summer, Lance will have to continue as the No. 2 player.
Cooper Rush, a well-liked backup, will therefore be demoted. In an early assessment of the 53-man roster, the analysts at Cowboys Wire anticipate that Rush will be dropped to the practice squad in addition to moving from No. 2 to No. 3 on the depth chart.
Cowboys advance on Cooper. It Would Be a Letdown If Rush If Rush was indeed one of the victims of the Cowboys’ manoeuvring on Prescott, that would be shocking as well as disappointing. However, they now prioritize Lance. Rush, 30, has spent the last seven seasons as a backup, so that’s a difficult turn of events. There was a serious discussion about whether Dallas should continue to use him even after Dak Prescott was healed because he performed so well in relief of the ailing Cowboys star in 2022 (he was 4-0 to start his starting streak).

And that means a demotion for popular backup Cooper Rush. At Cowboys Wire, they foresee not just a switch from No. 2 to No. 3 on the depth chart—they predict in an early look at the 53-man roster that Rush will drop to the practice squad.

Dak Prescott Negotiations Have Been Slow Going
According to NFL insider Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Cowboys’ approach with Prescott amounts to theatrics, and the team ultimately will get serious and give their franchise QB a mega-deal. In that case, perhaps the Cowboys would move Rush back to the No. 2 role and trade Lance elsewhere.
In an appearance on ESPN, Fowler said, “[The Cowboys] are all in on re-signing Dak Prescott. They just haven’t shown it yet.” He then wrote on Twitter/X last week, “Dallas wants Prescott long term, but talks have been slow thus far. Got all summer to hash out.”
