Yankees defeat the Red Sox thanks to Alex defeat Versus two…
The MLB-leading New York Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox 8-1 on Friday night, led by Luis Gil’s six strikeouts. Alex Verdugo produced a two-run home run and four RBIs in his return to Fenway Park. Before being dealt to New York in December in an unusual move between the AL East division rivals, Verdugo played for the Red Sox for four seasons. Verdugo smacked a straightaway center field single on the first pitch he saw from Boston right-hander Brayan Bello.
Gil (9-1) gave up one run on four hits and four walks in five innings of work. The right-hander, 26, hurled 104 pitches, which is a season high. Gil has an 8-0 record and a 1.14 ERA in his previous nine starts, giving up seven earned runs in 55 1/3 innings. Giancarlo Stanton singled to start the fourth inning, and Anthony Rizzo walked to give the Yankees (50-22) a lead. It looked as though Oswalda Cabrera’s ground ball to first baseman Dominic Smith allowed Bello to end the inning after Gleyber Torres grounded into a double play. However, Stanton’s goal was made possible by Bello’s mishandled attempt to cover first.
Bello (6-4) pitched 4 2/3 innings, giving up six hits, three walks, and five strikeouts while allowing five earned runs to be scored. Jose Trevino, the ninth-ranked hitter for the Yankees, smashed his seventh home run of the year in the ninth inning against right-hander Chase Anderson. Soto walked with two outs, and Judge’s double scored him. Judge was scored by Verdugo’s single that came next. Victor González, Michael Tonkin, Tommy Kahnle, and Caleb Ferguson, all of whom are relievers for New York, combined to pitch four scoreless innings and record eight strikeouts. Ferguson got all four batters he faced to strike out.
