Liverpool hero Xabi Alonso is hoping to sign a Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp favorite for Bayer Leverkusen. Alonso is hoping to sign a player who is a favorite of both. Discussions have already occurred, and a transaction might make a lot of sense. Joel Matip, a former defender for Liverpool, is being pursued by Bayer Leverkusen and Xabi Alonso on a free transfer, so he may return to the Bundesliga this summer. The player’s Anfield contract came to an end at the end of June. According to Patrick Berger, a reporter for Sky Germany, Leverkusen has contacted the 32-year-old about becoming a free agent, via X/Twitter. After eight years at Anfield, he could take Jonathan Tah’s place and return to Germany, first joining for Jurgen Klopp at the end of his contract with Schalke.
This follows a report from Africafoot earlier this month which suggested a two-year contract could be placed on the table for Matip by Leverkusen. The Bundesliga champion is seeking to kick on again having gone unbeaten in the German top-flight last year.
Alonso wants to sign an “experienced defender” and ex-Liverpool ace Matip fits the bill perfectly, despite the Cameroonian spending most of last season on the treatment table because of an ACL injury. Former Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich center-back Mats Hummels, now 35, is also under consideration.
As Leverkusen looks to establish itself in the Champions League again, having the experience of Matip to call upon could be very appealing. It looks like a really good match and, of course, Matip could face Liverpool next season in the UEFA competition should the two sides be drawn against one another in the new-look group stage or beyond.
