Jacoby Jones, former NFL wide receiver and kick returner, had passed away at the age of 40 due to hypertensive cardiovascular disease it was revealed. Jones, who was known for his dynamic play on the field, was found deceased in his New Orleans residence on July 14. Authorities have classified his death as natural causes.

Jones’ NFL career spanned nine seasons, beginning with his selection by the Houston Texans in the third round of the 2007 NFL Draft out of Lane College. His tenure in the league included stints with the Houston Texans, Baltimore Ravens, Pittsburgh Steelers, and San Diego Chargers.

During his career, Jones made a significant impact, particularly with the Baltimore Ravens, where he played a pivotal role in their 2013 Super Bowl victory. In the championship game, Jones caught a 56-yard touchdown pass and returned a kickoff 108 yards for a touchdown, contributing to the Ravens’ 34-31 win over the San Francisco 49ers. His performance that season earned him All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors, thanks to his 30 receptions for 406 yards and a touchdown, along with 1,167 kickoff return yards and two scores.

Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans, who was Jones’ teammate in Houston, expressed his condolences. “Jacoby was a fun-spirited, loving, and caring individual who always lit up any room he entered. His great spirit will be truly missed,” Ryans said at the onset of training camp. “He made a significant impact on many lives, including mine, and was dedicated to working with kids in various camps.”

Jones retired in 2015

Jones retired from professional football after the 2015 season but returned in 2017 to sign a one-day contract with the Ravens, allowing him to retire as a member of the team. He concluded his NFL career with 2,733 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns on 203 catches. As a kick returner, he amassed 4,940 yards and scored five touchdowns.

Former teammate Torrey Smith also shared his sorrow and respect for Jones on social media. “My brother, thank you for the memories and your impact on this world. Your play on the field and your jokes will live on forever. This one hurt me, man. We are going to miss you! Love you, bro!” Smith wrote.

Jones’ death is a significant loss to the football community and all who knew him. His legacy as a vibrant and talented player, as well as a dedicated community member, will be remembered fondly.
