And that shock twist is the news that Chelsea are now apparently in talks with Atletico Madrid over a surprise return to Stamford Bridge for Joao Felix instead.
The Portuguese forward spent the second half of the 2022-23 season on loan in west London, scoring only four goals in 20 total appearances across all competitions as the Blues eventually decided not to sign him on a permanent basis last summer.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are now in talks with Atletico over Felix following the collapse of their deal for Samu Omorodion at the 11th hour.
Agent Jorge Mendes is said to be in London for negotiations.
It seems this will be part of the Conor Gallagher deal, with Atleti desperate not to see that signing and their huge move for Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez also fall through.
