It caused quite a shockwave this week when Manchester City were briefly linked with a move for Liverpool star Luis Diaz, who is expected to thrive under Arne Slot.
Diaz has been linked with Barcelona all summer, but reports that Man City wanted to sign the winger to replace Julian Alvarez really shook the boat.
Fortunately, the reports were quickly dismissed as fake news, Diaz isn’t going to leave Liverpool for their league rivals.
But right now, news that Diaz is staying at Liverpool may not be quite enough to keep fans on Merseyside happy.
With just over two weeks of the transfer window remaining, Liverpool are yet to welcome a single signing in the Slot era.
Gary Neville fears Liverpool’s senior players may be unnerved because of the club’s failure to sign Martin Zubimendi recently – a frustrating start for Richard Hughes.
But after that disappointment, there could still be good news on the horizon, and Liverpool are considering a bid for Rodrygo at Real Madrid, who has been slightly put out by the arrival of Kylian Mbappe.
Man City could be about to beat Liverpool to Real Madrid winger Rodrygo
Rodrygo retained his starting role for Madrid against Atalanta in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday evening, a game that ended in a 2-0 win for Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
But reports in Spain still suggest that Rodrygo could become available, a talent who could be the star player at another top side.
For City, Rodrygo is seen as an alternative to Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze who Pep Guadiola is also enthusiastic about signing.
Of course, in a summer in which Liverpool have already lost out on Zubimendi as mentioned, it would be a blow if they failed to sign another one of their targets.
It remains to be seen just how intent Slot’s side are on signing Rodrygo, but in a summer in which Liverpool are interested in a winger, it wouldn’t bode well to watch the Brazilian head to Manchester.
That being said, one manager has just started publicly pursuing a Liverpool defender who Slot has praised in pre-season, demonstrating that there’s some busy weeks ahead.
