Breaking: Trio of CFB powerhouses dominate ESPN’s… see more

Right now, Alabama, Georgia and Michigan are arguably the three top programs in college football, so it’s no surprise to see that trio getting a ton of love in the preseason polls.

The recently released AP preseason Top 25 slated Georgia at No. 1, Alabama at No. 5 and Michigan — the defending national champion — at No. 9. That may seem low for both the Tide and the Wolverines, but consider that both programs feature new head coaches in 2024. Nick Saban retired in favor of Kalen DeBoer at Alabama and Jim Harbaugh skipped town for the Los Angeles Chargers. He’s been replaced by Sherrone Moore in Ann Arbor.

Sideline changes aside, all three rosters remain chock-full of talent. So much so that the Bulldogs, Crimson Tide and Wolverines led the way in ESPN’s 2024 college football preseason All-America team with three first-team All-Americans each.

For Georgia, QB Carson Beck (a Heisman Trophy candidate), guard Tate Ratledge and safety Malaki Starks all made the elite cut.

For Alabama, center Parker Brailsford, guard Tyler Booker and new kicker Graham Nicholson — who, prior to arriving in Tuscaloosa, was the first MAC player to be named the nation’s top place-kicker, a feat achieved last season at Miami (Ohio).

For Michigan, tight end Colston Loveland, defensive tackle Mason Graham (last season’s Rose Bowl MVP) and cornerback Will Johnson made the outlet’s preseason first-team.

Though all three teams are sure to be talented in 2024, that doesn’t mean there aren’t question marks.

For Georgia and Carson Beck, it’s whether or not he can live up to the Heisman hype.

For Alabama, whether or not DeBoer can live up to Saban’s championship standard.

For Michigan, it’s how a significant purge of talent to the NFL (including the head coach) will impact a first-year head coach.

No matter how it shakes out, though, it can’t be denied that all three of these teams have talent.

Packers last remaining free agent has finally signed elsewhere

Packers last remaining free agent has finally signed elsewhere

The Green Bay Packers entered the offseason with 17 free agents, including unrestricted, restricted, and exclusive-rights ones. Now, every one of them has signed with a new team in the NFL. The only one remaining was safety Rudy Ford, but he agreed to a deal with the Carolina Panthers on Wednesday. A sixth-round pick in 2017, Ford has already played for the Arizona Cardinals, Philadelphia Eagles, and Jacksonville Jaguars. He initially signed with the Packers in 2022 and spent two years in Green Bay. In 2022, he played 43% of the defensive snaps and 25% of the special teams snaps. Last season, he became a full-time starter, playing 73% of the defensive snaps and 15% on special teams. Ford was a useful piece in 2023, finishing the season with a 69.9 PFF grade, including 72.9 in coverage and two interceptions. He allowed a 30.1 passer rating when targeted. The signing was made in August, so Rudy Ford won’t count for the Packers compensatory pick formula in 2025. According to Over the Cap, Green Bay is expected to receive only a seventh-round pick for losing Yosh Nijman to the same Panthers. The losses of Darnell Savage and Jon Runyan were compensated by the signings of Xavier McKinney and Josh Jacobs. Turnover at safety The Packers decided to rebuild the safety position in 2024. Therefore, they allowed Darnell Savage, Jonathan Owens, and Rudy Ford to walk in free agency. On the other hand, they signed Xavier McKinney and drafted Javon Bullard, Evan Williams, and Kitan Oladapo. The only safety with a significant amount of defensive snaps kept from last year was former seventh-round pick Anthony Johnson Jr. List of Packers free agents in 2024 UFA CB Corey Ballentine (Green Bay Packers) TE Tyler Davis (Green Bay Packers) RB AJ Dillon (Green Bay Packers) CB Keisean Nixon (Green Bay Packers) LB Kristian Welch (Green Bay Packers) LB Eric Wilson (Green Bay Packers) TE Josiah Deguara (Jacksonville Jaguars) T Yosh Nijman (Carolina Panthers) S Jonathan Owens (Chicago Bears) G Jon Runyan Jr. (New York Giants) S Darnell Savage (Jacksonville Jaguars) S Rudy Ford (Carolina Panthers) RFA CB Robert Rochell (Green Bay Packers) – he wasn’t tendered and signed back with the Packers as a UFA RB Patrick Taylor (New England Patriots) ERFA T Caleb Jones (Green Bay Packers) P Daniel Whelan (Green Bay Packers) RB Emanuel Wilson (Green Bay Packers) Street free agents Even though every player whose contract with the Packers expired after the 2023 season has signed a deal elsewhere, there are still some players whom Green Bay released without a new team. That list most notably includes tackle David Bakhtiari, but also players like quarterback Alex McGough and fullback Henry Pearson.

Analysts repeat big concern about Commanders’ Jayden Daniels

Long before the Washington Commanders made Jayden Daniels the second overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft, concerns about the quarterback’s size and his ability to stay healthy through a full pro season hovered over his status. Such worries haven’t disappeared as Daniels presumably prepares to enter September as Washington’s QB1. “The biggest challenge, I think, for the staff will be working with him to avoid taking big hits on his slender frame without taking away what he brings to the table in the run game, something that’s easy on paper but tough to put into practice,” Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated said about Daniels for a piece published Tuesday night. Daniels has impressed teammates, onlookers and opposing players with his performances from springtime workouts through this past Saturday’s preseason matchup against the New York Jets. As Ricky Doyle of NESN pointed out, though, former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick recently reminded everybody during an interview that rookie signal-callers routinely face “basic” defenses that aren’t “showing too much” during summer joint practices and exhibition contests. Thus, defenses don’t make players such as Daniels pay via punishing hits until the games begin to matter in September. “If I were the Commanders, I would not let Jayden Daniels see the field again this preseason,” former quarterback and current NFL analyst Chase Daniel of The Athletic wrote for a Wednesday article. “He just looks smaller than what he weighed in at the combine. If there was one knock against him, he does not know how to slide, he does not know how to protect himself.” Back in 2023, quarterback Anthony Richardson now of the Indianapolis Colts measured 6-foot-4 and 244 pounds at the NFL Scouting Combine. Richardson later did not know “when to get down” in certain situations, and he suffered a concussion in Week 2 of his rookie campaign before what became a season-ending shoulder injury sidelined him in just his fourth start. To compare, Daniels is listed at 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds. As of Wednesday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook had Daniels second among the betting favorites at +475 odds to win the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award. He likely won’t stay in OROTY conversations for long if Daniel is right about the first-year pro not knowing “how to protect himself” when facing what won’t be “basic” defenses.

2 Seattle Seahawks Players Most Likely To Be Traded In 2024

The Seattle Seahawks are in the midst of a reworking roster. For the first time in more than a decade, Pete Carroll will not be the team’s head coach in Week 1. As such, seemingly everything is on the table for the franchise residing within a stone’s throw of Puget Sound. However, a couple of names could be on the trade block before anyone else. Here’s a look at two Seahawks players who could be on the team for one regular season game and gone the next. Tyler Lockett, WR Tyler Lockett has been a staple of the Seahawks for about a decade. He built his name with Russell Wilson. He managed to maintain a semblance of momentum with Geno Smith, but now appears to be on a decline. Lockett is coming off his second consecutive dip in receiving yards in 2023. At 31 years old, the clearest diagnosis is an age-related decline. The 2023 campaign also was the first time he dipped below 1000 yards since 2018. Last season, Lockett still managed to produce 894 yards, which has a place in the NFL. However, if the Seahawks opt to start their rebuild by the mid-season mark, trading Lockett would be arguably the fastest way to get draft capital quickly. Noah Fant, TE Noah Fant was acquired in the blockbuster Russell Wilson trade. While the souvenir is a nice reminder of the trade for Seahawks fans, it isn’t quite practical. Fant earned just 414 yards as the team’s starting tight end last season. If the Seahawks want to rebuild the position and start from scratch, they wouldn’t be risking much of a dip if Fant doesn’t work out. However, as a veteran tight end, a contender may be willing to burn a seventh-round pick to acquire Fant to help fill out a depth spot in a win-now move. Removing Fant from the equation would elevate Pharoah Brown to the starting role, who would work as a shot in the dark as a receiving tight end. It likely wouldn’t be the long-term fix as a 30-year-old player, but it would give a fresh look at the offense. Otherwise, the team could turn to unknowns Tyler Mabry or Brady Russell just to see if they can find a gamer.

Eagles CB has hilarious contract advice for Cowboys’ CeeDee Lamb

As of Wednesday afternoon, Dallas Cowboys star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb remained in the middle of a holdout amid his desire for a contract extension. During the latest edition of his “Big Play Slay” podcast, Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Darius Slay offered Lamb some humorous advice regarding how the 25-year-old should handle the situation. “I know you’re on the rival team, but if you want to hold out, hold out for each Eagles game,” Slay said about Lamb, as shared by Chris Franklin of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com. “You can play everybody else, just hold out for each Eagles game. I know [Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones] cares about that game a lot because he doesn’t like losing to us, so just go out there and say, ‘I’m not playing against y’all.'” The Eagles won’t face the Cowboys during the upcoming season until the Week 10 showdown at Dallas’ AT T Stadium on Nov. 10. While one could credit Slay for already thinking about future matchups versus a division rival, it’s worth noting that multiple reporters and also teammate Micah Parsons hinted as recently as this week that Lamb will receive his desired deal before Week 1. Slay did take somewhat of a shot at Jones after the 81-year-old curiously said last week he felt “no urgency” to get Lamb’s extension done. Jones later attempted to walk that comment back, and the latest updates suggest he is close to paying his WR1. “I’m all for my man getting paid because he’s one of the best receivers in the league,” Slay added about Lamb. “For Jerry to sit here and say he’s not in a rush to get him situated is kind of crazy because he is one of your best players, and you’re not in a rush to get him his worth…I’m not going to lie to you, it would be hard for me to play for an organization like that—a place that is not willing to take care of its guys.” During an ESPN Radio appearance earlier this week, retired cornerback Asante Samuel noted how “something’s going on” with the Cowboys this offseason, as Jones “loves his players” and “treats them right.” Slay likely hopes he and the Eagles will be able to take advantage of whatever is going on with Dallas through at least January 2025.
