THE greatest coach in college football history, Nick Saban, will be honored next month, and the tears are already coming from Alabama Crimson Tide fans.
There will be a dedication of the newly named Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium on September 7th, a lasting tribute to the man who gave Alabama such glorious success and memories.
Alabama will be facing the South Florida Bulls, and it promises to be the most special of nights.
They posted confirmation of the dedication to come on X, the site formerly known as Twitter.
A number of fans replied with emojis and gifs of tears to express their emotion.
And there were many warm messages too, about a man whose sporting achievements clearly deserve to be recognized.
“Well deserved, congrats coach!” one fan said.
“It’s not tears… just something in my eye,” another fan said.
“No honor in the history of sports has ever been more deserved,” a third fan posted.
“Legendary coach, amazing guy. This is brilliant news,” a fourth fan said.
“What a day this will be, can’t wait,” a fifth fan said.
Saban won seven national championships in his storied career.
The 72-year-old retired in January, and made it very clear how much his time with the team meant to him and wife Terry.
“The University of Alabama has been a very special place to Terry and me,” Saban said.
“We have enjoyed every minute of our 17 years being the head coach at Alabama as well as becoming a part of the Tuscaloosa community.
“It is not just about how many games we won and lost. It’s about the legacy and how we went about it. We always tried to do it the right way.”
Saban will soon be taking on a different role for the 2024 season.
He will be working for ESPN on their College GameDay show.
Saban revealed earlier this year that he was spending a lot of his spare time playing golf.
He made an appearance during television coverage of the Masters at Augusta in April.
