The Minnesota Vikings have just announced a roster move that I’m pretty sure nobody saw coming and, quite frankly, I’m pretty perplexed by.
The team has announced that they have signed quarterback Brett Rypien, and in order to make room for him on the roster the team has waived quarterback Jaren Hall.
Hall, after looking rough in the preseason opener, looked very good in the team’s final two preseason games, including a very good performance in Philadelphia to wrap up the preseason. He earned a spot on the roster when the final 53 was announced on Tuesday and there were more than a few folks who thought he should be the primary backup to Sam Darnold ahead of Nick Mullens, but the team has chosen to go in a different direction.
I’m not sure if this is an attempt to get Hall onto the practice squad or something, but I can’t imagine it’s going to be successful if that’s the case.
Rypien is the nephew of Super Bowl-winning quarterback Mark Rypien and has been in the NFL since 2019 when he went undrafted out of Boise State. He originally signed with the Denver Broncos and spent four seasons there. He has also spent time with the Los Angeles Rams, Seattle Seahawks, and New York Jets. He spent training camp this past season with the Chicago Bears but was let go as a part of their final cuts.
In his NFL career, Rypien has appeared in ten games with four starts, with his teams going 2-2 in games he started. He has completed 58.3% of his passes and thrown four touchdown passes against nine interceptions.
I’ll say what I said in the opening paragraph. . .I don’t understand this move at all. I guess Rypien has a bit more experience but he doesn’t appear to be as good a quarterback as Hall is at this point, particularly given what we saw from Hall over the course of this preseason.
We’ll have more on any roster moves that the Vikings make whenever they make them.
