The Green Bay Packers will play only seven true road games during the 2024 regular season against nine home games. Next Friday’s season opener will take place in Sao Paulo, Brazil, when the Packers play the Philadelphia Eagles; the Eagles are technically the home team for that game, but practically speaking that game is a neutral site contest.
However, despite the formal designation as the “road” team, the Packers will be wearing their typical home green jerseys, as the team’s official Twitter account revealed on Friday morning:
This means that the Packers should don their green jerseys for at least nine games this season after all — first in Brazil in week one then in eight of their nine home games. About a month ago, Green Bay announced a white uniform setup with white helmets, which the team will wear at home against the Houston Texans in week 7.
The Packers wearing green in week one takes on an added bit of intrigue, however, given the stadium that they and the Eagles will play in. Corinthians Arena, the site of the game, is home to soccer team S.C. Corinthians Paulista, whose primary color is red; their cross-town rival, Palmeiras, uses green as its primary color, and Corinthians generally discourages players and fans from wearing any green items in the stadium. There is no formal ban on the color, however, and this is simply an interesting side note in a game that should be a compelling and exciting opener for both teams.
Meanwhile, the Eagles are wearing an entirely new uniform combination for this game, with no items featuring green as a primary color. Philadelphia will match up their white jerseys black helmets and pants, keeping the green limited to the jersey numbers and uniform accents.
One potential reason why the Eagles have chosen to wear their road white jerseys is the expectation of hot temperatures at game time. However, the extended forecast from the Weather Channel currently projects a high temperature of 77 degrees Fahrenheit in Sao Paulo next Friday, and with the game kicking off well after sunset, temperatures could be closer to the expected overnight low of 64. If temperatures end up being in the high 60s, conditions should be ideal for a week one game.
