Following Texas’ 52-0 victory over Colorado State, head coach Steve Sarkisian made the following comments regarding his defense during his post-game news conference: “I’m impressed of our secondary’s ability to really limit the big plays from a defensive perspective. It was wonderful to see those guys come out and stop that passing game the way they did, Sarkisian remarked. “I felt there were a few leaks in the run game, so we need to fix those. But as a coach, I’m most happy of having the first shutout in school history in the first game of the season since 2004.
For the majority of the day, the Longhorns pinned the Rams inside their own zone. Only twice did CSU enter Texas’ half of the field, but they were unable to score. The first half ended with the Longhorns forcing seven punts, two INTs, and two downs turnovers on Colorado State’s possessions. Jahdae Barron, a defensive back for Texas, intercepted one of those passes and returned it thirty yards, giving the Longhorns another opportunity to score.
Only 192 yards were gained overall by the Rams. In contrast to Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers, who averaged a first down on his pass attempts, their passing game was abysmal, as they only managed 74 yards of total passing on the day and an average of just three yards per attempt. Tory Horton, a wide receiver for Colorado State, was also rendered ineffective by the Longhorns, who only allowed him 31 yards on 5 catches, keeping him out of the end zone. Texas will need to put on a similar show the following Saturday at the Big House in Ann Arbor when they travel to play the Michigan Wolverines, a more formidable foe.
