AC Milan are still searching for their first win of the season after they drew 2-2 with Lazio last night, but again they had to come from behind to get anything.
As Corriere dello Sport (via MilanNews) reports, the game has brought with it a trail of criticism and controversy, in particular on how Theo Hernandez and Rafael Leao voluntarily decided to distance themselves from the rest of the team and the coach during the cooling break, which caused a stir.
However, that only came after Fonseca’s bold choice to leave two of the best players out of the starting line-up. The Frenchman and the Portuguese, with the help of Tammy Abraham, had to come off the bench anyway to rescue a draw, so no benefit came from the end result.
In terms of what it does to the environment, the choice had negative and counterproductive effects, perhaps seen in the choice of the two players not to participate in the team chat at the cooling break. Speaking of cooling break, the internationals coming up next weeks should provide a welcome pause.
Speaking after the game, both Theo and Fonseca poured water on the fire. The Frenchman downplayed the issue, saying that neither he nor Leao needed the cooling break, having just come on.
Fonseca meanwhile put their exclusion down to condition and the type of match: “Maybe people see this as a punishment but it will never be like that. It’s a choice for what we need. Theo is not physically well, I spoke to them and they understood.”
