REPORT: Why Italian praise Davide Massa officiating Lazio vs Milan….see more

The referee Davide Massa and his officiating crew have been praised for their handling of the game between AC Milan and Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico last night.

Milan left the capital with a draw, but the match against Lazio – in addition to being the last before the international break – brings with it some slight controversy over a couple of incidents. Radio Rossonera have relayed the verdicts of La Gazzetta Sportiva and Corriere dello Sport.

According to the former, there was nothing significant about the two Lazio protests in the first half. It was correct not to call a foul for the contact between Dia and Maignan (2nd minute) and between Pavlovic and Castellanos (44th minute).

There were a couple of shouts for handballs by Filippo Terracciano and Yunus Musah, but in both cases it happened at close range and with the arm not extended in an unnatural position. La Gazzetta gave him a rating of 7 out of 10. In addition, the six cards assigned by referee Massa were correct.

On the contrary, for CorSport they were ‘perhaps a little too many cards in relation to the match’. The referee was given a 6.5, topped off with a positive report card: ‘He brought home the match without worries or problems. Decisions made in the two areas were all spot on’.

The Roman newspaper then also explains the regular nature of the aforementioned alleged handballs in the second half: ‘Own play by Terracciano, who kicked onto his left arm, correct to let play continue. Musah’s arm was attached to the body on a clearance by Tomori. No penalty’.
