At present, we are awaiting an update from AC Milan and Inter about their thoughts on the San Siro renovation project, and Mayor Sala has spoken about the plans from the city, and what is needed.
In the past few months, it has seemed increasingly likely that Milan will move to San Donato when the time allows. They have begun several processes to prepare for the new stadium, and given they have already bought land, their preferred outcome is seemingly obvious.
With that in mind, they have not completely ruled out the idea of remaining at San Siro. They have attended meetings, alongside Inter, to listen to the proposals of WeBuild – who have stepped forward to take the reigns on the project – but a decision is yet to be made.
Reports continue to suggest that Gerry Cardinale and the management see a new stadium as the key to moving forward, but with a new stadium set to cost at least €600 million more than a renovation project, it must be considered.
Today, Mayor Giuseppe Sala spoke about the future of the stadium to Corriere.it, and his words have been relayed by Milan News.
“As we are putting together my agenda, that of Inter and Milan, we do not yet have a date. Certainly in mid-September we will meet because we need to understand, but also the teams, what they want and what they can do. Our proposal at this point is solid.
“At the appropriate time we will report to the city council and it will be after an understanding of a real interest on the part of the teams,” he stated.
“We know that on the one hand we have to make a tender and at this point it should be structured by giving the fundamental role to the function of football, and with the two possibilities of both sale and long-term concession, 90 years or something like that. But I don’t think it can be a negotiation, none of us want to make a profit, I would like to take away a problem and give a future life to Milan, the price is not set by us but by the revenue agency which has a mandate that we formally gave it.
“I’m not talking about the stadium, I’m talking about the area around it where the hypothesis is not just one, so the revenue agency has its work cut out for it. There are two or three possibilities depending on how far the teams may have an interest, it is to be defined to do what with it, but there is a fixed point in the space of the Pgt rules.”
